Portrait Posing Tips | Old Town Temecula, CA

If you saw Tiffany & Natalie’s  photoshoot here, you saw that it was a time where I got to help Grace out with posing in portraiture! I’ve had a few people ask what is my best tip for posing, so I decided to share a couple behind the scene shots of the time I got to help Grace with her posing, and give you a tip that always helped me in posing people naturally…

Make sure they’re comfortable. If they’re not comfortable in a pose, they won’t look comfortable!

One thing I always make sure to ask whether I’m posing a senior, a bride, or a family is.. are you (or you guys) comfortable like that? Is this something you would do normally? Even if it isn’t something they naturally do, they might feel comfortable doing it, and that’s what’s key to me! :)

Here are a few behind the scene shots of Grace working after I’d help her set up shots, and after I’d give her a tip or two! Now I don’t claim to be the best portraits photographer, but it was great being able to impart some of the tips I’ve learned over the years to a great friend! :)

This is an example of a pose that Tiffany & Natalie wouldn’t normally do, but they felt comfortable in these positions and it shows in their facial expressions! Another tip I gave her was if she get’s stuck in not knowing how to pose someone but has a location envisioned, get the person to the location you want him/her to be in and go from there, move them around and see what works best! Sometimes that helps me get into the flow of things!

I absolutely loved setting up this pose! This is something I could see Tiffany & Natalie doing naturally… talking with one another, and sharing in their sisterhood!

This tree shot was another of my faves! Here’s a shot of Grace helping to put this into action!

To wrap things up and put it into a note form, here are my two tips for those aspiring photographers out there that are newer to it than I am!

  1. Make sure your client/model is comfortable in the pose they’re doing! Since more often than not, your portraits clients won’t be professional models (unless you’re in that industry), their discomfort will show in their photos!
  2. If you’re stuck and don’t know how to pose your client, but you have a spot that you love and want to shoot at, set them into your visual frame and begin posing them! Work it out and make them do different things until it gets to your liking! I like to start off simply, and work off from there! :)

Happy Friday!!
